Thankfully, this year we have had lots of school work to keep us busy, even though you wouldn't know it from my blog... so I am going to share some of the highlights of what we have been doing and working on when it is just too cold to go outside and play. :)
First of all, we were blessed to be able to travel in December. We went to Indiana and Illinois to visit family, eat too much, sleep too much, and remember why we didn't settle there permanently (it is just too cold!) lol Anyway, one really neat thing we were able to do was visit a children's discovery center near Chicago. My girls had a blast! There were so many hands-on activities and pretend play that it entertained the girls all day! There was a water room, a music room, a nursery, grocery store, animal hospital, cafe, and art room. The doll house was definitely Mikayla and Susannah's favorite place. They rocked and fed the babies, dressed them, and put them down for naps. By the time they were done, we were ALL tuckered out!

After all of our Christmas excitement, we resumed our Hearts of Dakota curriculum. In many ways, this has been a real blessing during the month of January... it gave us something to do every day with the girls, providing structure on those days where I would typically want to hibernate. Mikayla is loving all of the hands-on art activities and makes sure we get our school work done every day. Acting out the Bible stories gives the girls a little dramatic outlet (and they have drama to spare between the two of them). I have started doing a few handwriting pages every week with Mikayla... although she isn't thrilled about them, she will do them and get them out of the way first (so we can get to the "fun" stuff).

It has been a lot of fun to see Mikayla learn over the winter. I love the questions she asks about science and health, helping her learn to read, and teaching her math. All of it reminds me why I wanted to do this to begin with! As fun as it is, the best part of being a homeschooling mom is that I get to see the growth in Mikayla's character. I love the days she asks about God and Jesus. I love when she wants to see the world through HIS eyes and not her own. Because I teach her at home, I get to see this every day! :)
Now, is it spring yet? :)
