Well, our Heart of Dakota curriculum is not tied into the typical school year, so I went to the internet for a few Valentine's Day ideas that could tie into what we are already working on.
Last week, we switched phonics curriculums to The Reading Lesson for Mikayla. Back in the fall, we had worked a little with Hooked on Phonics, but reading list after list of words was frustrating both of us. Since this is one of the programs that Heart of Dakota recommends with their kindergarten curriculum anyway, it seemed like a good option for us. Anyway, Mikayla is enjoying it so much more and progressing right through the first couple of lessons.
I am not very creative or crafty, but I wanted to do something for Valentine's Day that tied into her lessons. I made little paper hearts using a cookie cutter template and cut/pasted words on them to make the conversation hearts everyone has this time of year. All of the words are from the current lesson in her workbook. I made two sets so she could match the words with each other.
I knew that I better have something ready for Miss Susie Q too, so I printed sorting hearts for her to work with. We mixed them up...She then sorted them by color and then by size. She needed a little help the first time around, but I think if we do it again it will be much quicker and easier for her. Also, I think I would probably print them on cardstock next time... the regular printer paper was a little too flimsy for us to use more than once or twice.

I have to share one more activity we did. It was part of our curriculum this week and (with a little modification) became a great math activity. We were talking about young Daniel after he arrives in Babylon and refuses the "good" food from the king's table, so our activity revolved around plastic food. For Susie, it was straight forward... we filled several play kitchen plates with plastic food and counted what was on each plate. Mikayla's version was a little harder. We used the same plates and food and I placed a number in front of each plate (not the amount that was on there). Then, she had to add or subtract food to make it the same amount. We worked with easy numbers today, but she was really grasping the concept, so I think we will do it again in the future with different items and larger numbers.
| Before we started... for some reason the blocks are supposed to be "sprinkles." I'm still not sure where that came from! |
