Our New Journey

So... here we are in a place I never thought we would be. Homeschooling? Really? I first realized that people even did this while I was in nursing school. A friend of mine who helped inspire my daughter's name was homeschooled, which was a completely foreign concept to me at the time. She is a sweet, God-loving girl with a stay-at-home mom and a pastor for a dad, so I figured it must be a religious thing and sort of dismissed the whole thing as an anomaly of some kind. Normal people just don't do this, right?

Well, let me introduce you to my family. Normal may not be the best word to apply to us, but it will work for now. My husband is Jeff and he is awesome! We are not perfect (and there is no such thing anyway), but we love each other anyway. I am Melissa, a working RN who will always be a mom first. We have two little girls. The oldest is Mikayla (age 4, but going on 14) who is more independent than we even realize and her younger sister is Susannah (age 2) who is like a busy bee these days and constantly on the move.

When we were married, Jeff and I not only committed our marriage to God, but we also committed to raising our children to love and honor Him as well. We want to live out our love for Christ in every aspect of our lives, not just when we show up on Sunday mornings to our church. Now, two little princesses later, we are faced with some very tough choices. Do we send our four-yr-old to public school? private school? or there is always that last (and scary option) the home school. We chose the last option because we feel we can teach our children the morals and Christ-like character we want them to have. We want them to shine for Jesus and love and honor Him with all they do. Jeff and I both survived and thrived in public schools, so we don't look down on others who make that decision. We just don't feel like it is the best one for us. I decided to start a blog so that my friends and family can follow our journey as we step out in faith to teach our children. I know many of my friends and family do not know others who have taught their children at home-- maybe this blog will help provide a small window that will help them be a little more open to the possibilities around them.
