Finishing Little Hands to Heaven

Back at the beginning of September, I am not sure how convinced I was that our family could "do" the homeschool thing. I knew we would try, but I still had many doubts, even as we made plans to go ahead with it. We bought curriculum, supplies, and reorganized the classroom at least twice. Well, last week, we officially finished our first year of homeschooling. We completed all of the lessons in our Little Hands to Heaven curriculum!  Not only have we been able to "do" school at home, we have loved every almost every moment of it!

Most of the past few weeks were spent learning about Jesus' adult ministry, with a few lessons on the early church and Paul's missionary journeys. My girls have loved learning about Jesus, especially the activities we did around Easter. Although the curriculum does not align with holidays usually, in this case it worked out that we were studying Jesus' death and resurrection during Passion week.

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

Painting their version of the Garden of Gethsemane

This was fun for them, as we used foil for paper (since it was nighttime). Any opportunity to get out the paint is awesome in their eyes!

One of the activities in their Little Hands to Heaven curriculum is called Count on Me. Basically, the page has five boxes in three rows and the child draws two, three, or four objects in each of the boxes (the object drawn relates to the day's lesson).  Then the child is supposed to use the visual aid to count by two's, three's, or four's.  To be honest, Mikayla was not making the connection and definitely not learning to count by multiples.  Finally, toward the end of the school year, I modified the activity a bit and we were finally successful!  I placed all the boxes in one line and wrote a number line at the bottom.  Now, she can count by two's and three's using those tools and understands how it works.

Susannah tries to keep up with her sister, but really didn't follow directions this time! I let her use stickers instead of drawing a picture, but she needs some work on one-to-one numbering.

We continue to pull some outside resources in for the girls' homework for reinforcement on the days I work. I expect this will continue throughout the summer, too.

From the Moffatt girls:

We still love these sight word printables to reinforce reading recognition.

We also like these Read, Trace, and Paste Sight Word Printables.

We have truly enjoyed our journey this year, but we are not over yet! We have some fun things planned for the summer, so stay tuned...
